Bookbub Bargains: My review of 'Before the broken star' by Emily R. King

Updated: Aug 30, 2019

This week's review is on a Teen and Young Adult fantasy story with mild romantic interest. I'd never read this author before, but her prior series seemed to have good reviews and the reviews on Amazon for the book were positive, (plus I love a good fantasy novel) so I went ahead and downloaded it. More than the dozens of stories I already have waiting for me to read, this story appealed to me and I wanted to read it right away.

At first, I was kind of disappointed. I felt like the author spent too much energy using flowery words instead of really giving depth to the characters. I almost gave up after the second chapter, because I was feeling very 'meh' about the whole thing.

I was still curious, and I wanted to know more about the main character and her mysterious clockwork heart. Through the end, I never really had my curiosity satisfied on this front... I never got a description of what it looked like, and for something so strange and fantastic (even in the fantasy world in which it exists) I'm disappointed that the author didn't describe the clock. I vacillated between imagining it like a pocket watch, swinging in her chest, and a large, glass-faced clock that took up half of her chest. Did it replace her breast? Is it above or below it? Just, what the what???

I thought the characters had interesting back stories, but just didn't have enough depth for me to really care about them. I still rooted for the MC and was pleased with the very slow development of the relationship - I love a good slow burn - and honestly I thought the world and religion was very well-developed and the story led to a good stopping point before leading on into the second book... It's not a cliff hanger but the reader is definitely left curious about what is going to happen.

The downside is: Typically Bookbubs are granted for books that have been out awhile and garnered enough positive reviews on multiple sites to really entice the reader. So I didn't realize until I went to look for the second book in the series that it wasn't even out yet. This book was on Bookbub BEFORE it released for sale ( I downloaded it May 9 and it went on sale June 1) at which point it already had a ton of reviews. I'm not sure how the author managed that, but more power to her. Beware to the buyer, though, since it is not a completed series. That said, the author appears to be following a rapid release so it should be complete within the next few months. Just learn from my mistakes and be knowledgeable before you delve in. I probably won't get the second book, since I will have moved on to another series and I'm not invested enough to remember to seek this one out when it's released.

My score: 4 out of 5 *'s - Good story, lacking some depth to the characters which makes it difficult for me to really care about them.
